The Calvert County Agriculture Commission
and the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development
Commission/Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland announced that the
informational seminar "Pasture Beef-Goals, Management and
Opportunities" that took place on February 8 was a success.
The seminar brought an audience of approximately 40 people. Elmer
Dengler, USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Dr.
Lester Vough, Associate Professor, Forage Crops-Agronomy, University
of Maryland were guest speakers and Mr. Clark Aist, farmer from Upper
Marlboro, Maryland also discussed how he uses pasture grasses and
rotational techniques.
The seminar focused on four key elements of pasture raised beef,
which included goal setting, soil-plant management needs, year long
grazing and finishing beef on grass. The seminar was open to area
farmers and landowners interested in learning about pasture raised
beef as an income producing enterprise to sustain or increase revenue.
This seminar is part of a continuing series focused on farming issues
presented by the Calvert County Department of Economic Development.
