Calvert County Agriculture Commission Announces "Alternative Enterprises" Seminar

The Calvert County Agriculture Commission announced today that it will host an informational seminar with guest speaker James A. Maetzold, National Alternative Enterprise & Agritourism Leader of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

This free informational seminar is scheduled for Saturday, January 12, 2002 from 2:00-4:00p.m. at the Calvert Pines Senior Center Auditorium, Prince Frederick. The topic of discussion will focus on existing opportunities and supplemental farming techniques. The purpose of the seminar is to support area farmers and landowners that are seeking other agritourism and income producing enterprises to sustain or increase revenue. Refreshments will be served. Registration is required. Registration deadline is January 4, 2002.

"The NCRS has developed a "tool kit" to aid in this transition. How this resource tool kit can assist farmers, landowners, and other entrepreneurs in developing a business will be presented," said James A. Maetzold, an economist with the United States Department of Agriculture. Mr. Maetzold, who grew up on a farm, has 21 years of experience with the NRCS where he worked on the Soil and Water Resources Conservation Appraisal and Program for 17 years and as the National Alternatives Enterprises and Agritourism Leader for the past four years.
