The Calvert County Agriculture Commission
announced today that it will host an informational seminar with guest
speaker James A. Maetzold, National Alternative Enterprise &
Agritourism Leader of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
This free informational seminar is scheduled for Saturday,
January 12, 2002 from 2:00-4:00p.m. at the Calvert Pines Senior Center
Auditorium, Prince Frederick. The topic of discussion will focus
on existing opportunities and supplemental farming techniques. The
purpose of the seminar is to support area farmers and landowners that
are seeking other agritourism and income producing enterprises to
sustain or increase revenue. Refreshments will be served. Registration
is required. Registration deadline is January 4, 2002.
"The NCRS has developed a "tool kit" to aid in this
transition. How this resource tool kit can assist farmers, landowners,
and other entrepreneurs in developing a business will be
presented," said James A. Maetzold, an economist with the United
States Department of Agriculture. Mr. Maetzold, who grew up on a farm,
has 21 years of experience with the NRCS where he worked on the Soil
and Water Resources Conservation Appraisal and Program for 17 years
and as the National Alternatives Enterprises and Agritourism Leader
for the past four years.
