Mary Beth Cook, director, holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. She has worked for Calvert County Government for more than 29 years. She served as a project engineer with the Department of Public Works for the first 15 years of service. Cook was appointed to deputy director/zoning officer before becoming the Planning & Zoning director in 2020. Cook manages staff in the implementation of the Calvert County Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Ordinance; seven Town Center Master Plans and Zoning Ordinances; County Transportation Plan, Historic and Agricultural preservation. Cook also supervises long range and zoning planning, development and permit review, code enforcement, environmental review, historic and rural preservation, and the Division of Inspections & Permits.

Cook is a 2017 graduate of Leadership Southern Maryland and a 2019 graduate of Leadership Maryland. She is the immediate past-president for the Leadership Southern Maryland Board of Directors and remains active as a member of their Executive Committee. Cook earned a master’s certificate in High Performance Leadership from the National Association of Counties Professional Development Academy in April 2022 and is a 2022 graduate of Academy for Excellence in Local Governance at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy.
