Title: Public Safety Director

Dave McDowell was appointed as the director of the Department of Public Safety in June 2023. Prior to his appointment, McDowell served as a law enforcement officer with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, beginning in 1991. Throughout his 30-year-law enforcement career, he attained and served within every rank of the agency; serving 10 years as assistant sheriff. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in management science from Johns Hopkins University and is a second-generation Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy graduate. McDowell also serves as a criminal justice professor at the College of Southern Maryland and Stevenson University.
