Hike through this 1,460-acre wooded state park to the majestic Calvert Cliffs on the Chesapeake Bay. Formed over 15 million years ago, the cliffs contain more than 600 species of fossils. Gatewood Preserve offers stunning views and direct access to Battle Creek. Nestled between two county parks, it connects with five miles of trails at Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm. The preserve expands public access to open space for outdoor recreation, including water access, hiking, fishing, and nature study, while also enhancing the protection of Battle Creek and the Patuxent Watershed. The site may eventually become part of a trail linking Prince Frederick to the Patuxent River. The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk. Approximately 36 miles from where the Patuxent meets the Chesapeake Bay, the wharf was once an important mode of transportation for local residents, farms and businesses.
