Ward Farm Recreation Area
Improvements continue at Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park. The new playground opened summer of 2023 and the entire trail system reopened after a brief closure to repair a pond embankment. A major field lighting project was completed in late spring 2023, along with a state-of-the-art irrigation system. Future upgrades include shaded dugouts, a 9-hole disk golf course, and an overlook pavilion.
We invite you to view the Ward Farm Master Plan park development layout map, completed in 2015, for a glimpse at what's to come!
Dunkirk District Park
Construction has begin on the new tennis and pickleball facility! The existing tennis courts are currently well past life cycle and in need of replacement. Rather than resurface current structures, Calvert County is preparing to improve on the amenities offered to the public by relocating the tennis courts to a new location near the existing dog park. This will accommodate five tennis courts, four exclusive pickleball courts, and a climate-controlled restroom facility that will allow year-round use. Additional parking will be added to accommodate use. This work began in October 2023 and should be completed by late-2024.
See below for the new tennis facility site plan.
Chesapeake Hills Golf Course
The Chesapeake Hills Golf Course Clubhouse is currently under construction and is slated for opening in early 2024. The current plans are for an 8,149-square-foot clubhouse building and outdoor patio situated where the old clubhouse once stood. It will include a banquet area, a grill room and restaurant, in addition to amenities for golfers. The rendering below shows what the completed clubhouse will look like.
In addition, two rain shelters were completed and opened in late 2023.
A new playground was installed at Broomes Island Park in November of 2023. It replaces the outdated play equipment and goes beyond ADA requirements to allow children with different mobility, neurological, and intellectual needs to play freely. The inclusive playground features new swings, a spiral slide, two glide slides, a ribbon climber, a rock climber, a beanstalk climber, and several tactile inserts. In addition, several new benches flank the play area.
These images, drawn by the manufacturer, show what the playground looks like. Stay tuned for final photos soon!
Southern Community Center
A new swing set was installed at the Southern Community Center in July 2023. This was modified equipment from the previous Dunkirk District Park playground that is still in excellent shape. Thank you to our maintenance team for installing and for their clever adaptive reuse!
Battle Creek Nature Center
Plans are underway to reconstruct and reopen the Nature Center that was damaged in a November 2022 fire. We are grateful to Calvert County Fire-Rescue-EMS who extinguished the fire very quickly and there was relatively little structural damage. However, the smoke damage was extensive. Parks and Recreation staff are now working with a consulting team to repair and restore the 50+ year old facility and make needed upgrades.
While the park and trails remain open during normal business hours, the Nature Center is slated for reopening in the summer of 2024.
Dominion Energy Regional Park
We are thrilled to announce an upcoming addition to Lusby – a state-of-the-art sports facility! The Department of Parks & Recreation is set to build a cutting-edge multi-sport stadium featuring a 2,000-seat capacity, a well-equipped press box, and a dedicated food truck area. This impressive facility, situated at Dominion Energy Regional Park (10495 S Solomons Island Road), will serve as a host venue for lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, and football tournaments, all on a sustainable and resilient synthetic turf field.
The stadium promises versatility, year-round availability, and substantial revenue-generating potential for Calvert County. This top-tier facility is poised to draw local and regional talent, while also serving as a vital hub for training programs, camps, and clinics that foster skill development.
We eagerly anticipate the positive impact this facility will have on our vibrant Calvert County community, enhancing our reputation as a destination for sports, recreation, and community engagement.
